Daniel

I call Mills to find out what the actual situation is first thing. When he answers, it’s with an apology.

“I’m sorry I surprised you last night with Demetri. But we’ve got to get him out, or he will be stuck. I wouldn’t have done that to you if I could have helped it.”

“Yeah, whatever, man. I thought a lot about him last night. He’s never been the trouble, it was always his sister. And I think Aiden can help him. I need to know what our next steps are.”

“Well,” he drawls out, “your guys are keeping eyes on the house where our perps are. Your family is building their case against Stan, separate from ours, but if it takes him out of the equation, it works, right?”

“Yeah, I know they’re talking to you guys and working stuff out, so it’s all coordinated. I just hate not knowing what’s going on.”

“What’s going on is we are all doing our jobs. You are separating yourself from a bad company and relationship, your family is auditing their books to find discrepancies, which all companies do from time to time, and your girl is doing her job.”

“And Aunt Linda is there as backup. Can she still kick everyone’s ass?”

“That woman,” he laughs, “can still drink and shoot all of us under the table. If I thought there might be trouble brewing, I’d want her close to keep me safe.”

“Good to know, man. What are we doing with Demetri while we wait?”

“He’s getting everything he can from the family until it’s too dangerous for him to stick around. We have a date for the meeting of the big guys, so that’s our target.”

“Let me know what you need. We’re there for you.”

“Thanks, you, too. If shit goes down, let me know.”

I hang up with Mills as text messages flood my phone.

Vic: You better be coming in today, you got some explaining to do.

Grady: No movement on the house yet this morning.

Aiden: Demetri is sending me some stuff to look into. Thinks my family might be a connection.

Nate: Pulled some info after you let me know what was going on at The Center. Think we can get theft charges on Jeremy if you want them. He learned from a master, it looks like.

Well, fuck. Who do I answer first? The angry woman, the bored one, the one with a family issue the entire size of Ireland, or the one who just proved that I made a bad decision trusting someone I was supposed to take bullets for?

I reply to each of them in the amount of drama they will produce on my end.

Daniel: Keep your eyes open. They are obviously working on something, Grady.

Daniel: Don’t do anything that will get you pulled back into something you don’t want, Aid. I know you want to help, but I can’t lose you.

Daniel: Big fucking surprise. Got a number for me?

Daniel: I was injured in our last convoy on deployment, and I have scars on my legs. It’s fine, Dollface.
